Horridge House

The Horridge House at 612 First Avenue, Vinton Iowa, is the location of the Benton County Historical Society’s Archives and Museum. This house, built in the 1859, is an excellent example of Carpenter Gothic-style architecture. It was built by Dr. Hewett B. Clingan. The house is of brick believed to be of the local brickyards of that era. As you stand on the brick paved front porch, be sure to notice the original brass lion head door knocker. There is also a Romanesque sculptural relief, which was brought back from Italy by the second Mrs. Horridge and in the parlor is a beautiful French pier mirror.

Visitors will find period furnishings, clothing displays, and many artifacts. The kitchen is especially interesting because it is complete with a tin ceiling and tin walls.

The Horridge House, which contains the history and genealogy records of the Benton County Historical Society, is open for research on Wednesday from 1 PM to 4 PM or by appointment by contacting: Rose Rouse, email rozrouse@q.com or Ilene Kreider. email krinkjfk@netins.net   It also is available for tours by contacting BCHS at bentoncohistorical@gmail.com.
